Aikido: Japanese martial art

Aikido is a Japanese martial art, which was developed at the beginning of the 20th century. Its objective is to derive and intelligently use the force of an attack according to certain principles in order to temporarily incapacitate the opposing actor.

A synthesis of older fighting techniques

Aikido was recreated at the beginning of the 20th century by the Japanese Morihei Ueshiba from various other martial disciplines. The school is now located in the Japanese capital, Tokyo. It was not until 1951 that the combat technique was introduced in Europe. The master Tadashi Abe began to spread it from France. From there, Aikido reached Germany in the 1960s. After 1970 the German Aikido Federation was founded in the Federal Republic.

Aikido gets along without offensive attack

At the beginning of the fight, a stylized attack is set, which later can be arbitrary. This is to derive and use the force of this attack to incapacitate the attacker. No infringement is intended in the process. Various holding and throwing techniques are used. In Aikido, no offensive attack techniques are executed, but rather safety and defense techniques. All combat operations are based on a defensive and responsible mental attitude.

Clothing similar to judo

The clothing used during the exercises is the judo clothing introduced at the end of the 19th century. Advanced fighters wear the hakama, a kind of trouser skirt, over it. The wearing of the hakama is decided by the respective school. Training usually takes place without training weapons, but certain wooden training weapons are often used. The sport can be practiced in Germany in sports clubs and fitness centers.

A sport for body and mind

Aikido should be practiced by people who have good reactions. All the muscles of the body are involved, as well as the joints. Very strong stresses can occur due to rapid movements. The thoughtful planning of the fighting techniques trains the thinking and combination skills of the players. Martial arts can be well integrated into weight loss because it uses a lot of energy.
