Essential fatty acids are not produced by the human organism. They must be absorbed through the daily diet. The most important representatives are the omega-3 fatty acids and the omega-6 fatty acids. They perform important tasks in the body.

Essential fatty acids and their functions

Above all, they are important energy suppliers and help build cell membranes. They also help lower blood lipid and cholesterol levels. They also strengthen the immune system and protect against various heart diseases.

Avoid one-sided diet at all costs

When reducing body weight, make sure to eat a varied diet to prevent deficiency symptoms. If the organism is insufficiently supplied with one of the fatty acids, hair loss, poor wound healing, dry skin and high blood pressure may occur, for example.

Occurrence in numerous food products

Essential fatty acids are found in plant and animal products. These include some cold-water fish species, such as herring and mackerel. In addition, many vegetable oils have a high fatty acid content, e.g. sunflower oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil and corn oil. These oils should be protected from light, heat and atmospheric oxygen in the household to avoid fatty acid losses.
