French fries – a healthy source of energy?

Hearty and tasty fries are very popular, especially in the world of children. The slits made from the potato are industrially cut, cooled and packaged. But what do they really have to offer and how can potato wedges be integrated into a healthy lifestyle?

The history of French fries

Already about 100 years ago, fishing played an important role in Belgium. The Belgians fried the fish in plenty of hot fat and consumed it with relish. But one cold winter day the lakes and rivers were frozen for a long period of time. Fishing was thus impossible. In order not to go hungry, the Belgians carved small fish from their stockpiled potatoes and deep-fried them in hot fat. Already the popular French fries were born. Soldiers from the USA brought the dish with them to America after World War I, and a short time later they also found their reputation as a favorite dish on German plates.

Nutritional values of the fried potato

100 grams of fries have a calorific value of around 1,220 kJ. With a calorie content of about 291 kcal, the protein content is just 6 grams. Despite the high fat content of 13 grams per 100 grams of fries, the water content is a respectable 50 percent. Because the domestic potato brings a very high content of nutritional values and is also known as an important supplier of energy, it is very popular.

Calorie content of boiled potatoes

While 100 grams of French fries have a calorie content of about 291 kcal, the value of the popular boiled potato is only about 70 kcal. The fat content is also impressive at 0.1 grams. Boiled potatoes are therefore much healthier than the coveted fries. Thus, an evening meal with boiled potatoes not only provides valuable energy, but also contains a very low percentage of fats.

Healthy weight loss with French fries?

The potato is an excellent helper for weight loss. Potato diets have also been very successful and are popular. But a preparation of the tasty nightshade is recommended only with little fat. French fries can also help you lose weight if they are prepared with low fat, i.e. in the oven instead of the deep fryer. But on the whole, it should be said that the popular potato wedges should not appear in the menu more than 2 times a week.
