Tuna – delicious source of protein

Tuna belong to the mackerel family. The “big” or “blue” tuna is mainly used for food. Depending on the method of storage and preparation, the taste is very strong and spicy. At the same time, the intense flavor of canned tuna differs from fresh fish.

Tuna as one of the most popular types of fish

The history of fishing is long and probably finds its origins before the sixth century BC. Since time immemorial, the most diverse types of fish have been caught. Tuna fishing became popular especially from the 1950s. At first, it was sold mainly in cans due to its short shelf life, but soon fresh tuna steaks could also be enjoyed. To date, it has become one of the most popular fish species. Various measures have been taken to combat overfishing and threats to other species.

Healthy vitamins and trace elements

The tuna contains a variety of healthy ingredients. This includes, above all, a high proportion of proteins and essential amino acids. It also provides other valuable vitamins and trace elements. Here, the fatty acid pattern is balanced and the calorie count is low.

Nevertheless, some caution is advised in case of excessive consumption, since according to some researchers, the fish receives a relatively large amount of mercury. Too much in the body can lead to heart and brain problems.

Different preparation methods

Tuna can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. It can be added from the can to salads, pizzas or pasta dishes. However, as a fillet, it can also be fried or grilled.

Healthy addition to the menu

In general, tuna is a very healthy food, as it provides the body with many valuable nutrients. It is especially suitable for the supply of essential amino acids and proteins. For example, 100 g of tuna already contains 50 percent of the daily requirement of proteins (according to the German Nutrition Society).

In principle, the fish could be enjoyed daily, but the high mercury content could have a harmful effect on the body. Therefore, health-conscious individuals should aim for one can of tuna per week. Of course, as a variation, it is also possible to buy and prepare it as a fillet.
