Cherries are plants from the genus Prunus and belong to the rose family. There are many different types of sweet and sour cherries, each with its own particular flavor. They are harvested in Germany from June to August.
Cherries came to Europe early
The area of origin of the cherry is considered to be Asia Minor. The first fruits came to Europe before the birth of Christ. The famous Roman commander Lucullus took some plants from the area of today’s Turkey to Italy, from these developed today’s sweet cherries. From there, Roman conquest and trade activity brought them as far as northern Europe. In the case of the sour cherry, it is not known exactly where it came from and how it spread. It is believed to be a plant bastard of the sweet cherry. In certain areas of Germany, it became common to cultivate cherries in plantations in the 19th century. For example, the Fahner Heights in Thuringia are a well-known cherry-growing region.

Cherries contain many ingredients that have a beneficial effect on health. These include potassium, phosphorus, vitamins, folic acid, iron and beta-carotene. Basis for many foods
The cherries are processed into many products. Jam, jam, various cakes and pies, juices, spirits and confectionery are just a few products. A specialty are dried fruits, which taste very aromatic. In Germany, however, cherries are also particularly popular when eaten fresh.
A tasty snack
In the context of weight reduction, the cherry can be well integrated into the diet because of its low energy value of only 60 kilocalories in 100 grams.
